Stability effects in tonal clash contexts in Catalan

چکیده

This paper discusses the effects of tonal clash (or strict adjacency between two accents) on the phonetic realization of H* accents in Catalan. The analysis of the data shows that the adjacency of two rising accents triggers a drastic temporal reorganization of the Fo gestures involved, resulting in anticipation of the first gesture and delay of the second. Specifically, in crowded tonal environments we find that the first peak is placed significantly earlier with respect to the syllable onset and offset and the start of the second rise is located significantly later in the second syllable. Thus, the data reveals that Fo gestures are roughly timed to accented syllables, keeping a more o less floating relationship with the segmentals: both right and left-hand prosodic contexts (including clash situations) determine the alignment patterns of both the valley and the peak. Finally, no significant differences were found on the H scaling in clash vs. non-clash environments.

Prosodic effects on phrasing: Clash avoidance in Catalan

This paper empirically investigates the effects of the presence of stress clash on phrasing decisions in Catalan. An interesting fact about Catalan phrasing, initially noted by Oliva (1992) and also reportedbyPrieto (2005a), is that thepresenceof a clash in this language can optionally trigger prosodic restructuring. Five native speakers of Central Catalan read 32 stress-clashandnon-stress-clas...

Tonal targets in early child English, Spanish, and Catalan.

This study analyses the scaling and alignment of low and high intonational targets in the speech of 27 children - nine English-speaking, nine Catalan-speaking and nine Spanish-speaking - between the ages of two and six years. We compared the intonational patterns of words controlled for number of syllables and stress position in the child speech to the adult target speech provided by their moth...

Tonal stability modeling from audio chroma features

This work explores the possibility of modeling tonal stability from music signals, in an attempt to approximate in a different way an ubiquitous, yet controversial, topic in music research: that of the perception of tension and relaxation over time. We rely upon some of the most agreed hypothesis about the hierarchical properties of the tonal system, to define a scenario in which such features ...

The relevance of prosodic structure in tonal articulation Edge effects at the prosodic word level in Catalan and Spanish

A production experiment with 1600 potentially ambiguous utterances distinguished by word boundary location in Catalan and Spanish (e.g., Cat. mirà batalles ‘(s)he looked at battles’ vs. mirava talles ‘I/(s)he used to look at carvings’; Span. da balazos ‘(s)he fires shots’ vs. daba lazos ‘I/(s)he gave ribbons’; stressed syllables are underlined) was undertaken. Results revealed strong (and stati...

Early Acquisition of F0 Alignment and Scaling Patterns in Catalan and Spanish

Six Catalan-speaking and six Spanish-speaking children between the ages of 24 and 48 months participated in a controlled naming task to elicit statement intonation patterns. A total of 127 utterances were prosodically analyzed using Cat_ToBI and Sp_ToBI ([1], [2]) and phonetic analyses of tonal alignment and scaling were performed. Our results show that children as young as two can finely contr...
